Advocacy and Research

Tax reform. Anti-money laundering. Corporate governance. CGA Associations speak out and publish views on many important issues to advance the interests of CGAs and inform the Canadian public.

At the national level, CGA-Canada promotes excellence in the development and reform of accounting standards and practices through its work with organizations such as Canada’s Accounting Standards Oversight Council (AcSOC) and the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB). Other significant relationships include links with the Financial Standards Planners Council (FSPC), and ongoing public policy dialogue on many diverse issues, with federal and provincial government officials and legislators.

CGA, through its national body CGA-Canada, is also a leader in international advocacy, supporting initiatives of the International Federation of Accountants Council (IFAC) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).

To support its advocacy role, provincial and national CGA organizations conduct research and develop reports and policy positions on key areas of interest, including:

  • federal and provincial tax and fiscal policy
  • accounting and auditing standards
  • financial reporting standards
  • tax reform
  • securities regulation
  • anti-money laundering measures
  • pension reform
  • corporate governance
  • the restoration of public confidence in Canadian capital markets
  • issues related to the small and medium sized business sector
